Give Them Hope:
We were alerted to the issue of homeless dogs in Taiwan through an email from a fellow So. CA rescuer. The rescue organization, The Animal Rescue Team Taiwan (ARTT), have been taking on homeless Taiwan dogs for some time and asked if we could take in a litter of 4-5 month old Lab puppies and a Beagle.
Taiwan is a population dense country with very small living quarters. The "Dog Fad" has erupted there with cute little puppies being in high demand, with little interest in the large breed dogs and especially street dogs. When folks find that living in close quarters with a dog isn’t necessarily all it’s cracked up to be, the dogs either go the ‘asylum’ (Taiwanese terminology for a shelter) where they’re routinely euthanized after 7 days or they get turned out on the streets. Our rescue counter-parts in Taiwan are primarily focused on the street dogs and rescuing them from the horrific conditions they have been subjected to in their lives. Some dogs find their homes in Taiwan, but overwhelmingly the large breed dogs are overlooked and the rescuers are left with few options.
About once a month we agree to take in dogs who otherwise would have to be euthanized or let go back onto the streets where they would be subjected to the same torture, disease and ailments as before. Thus far we've taken on about 30-40 dogs.

Our friends in Taiwan say this about Margret...
Margret was found in front of a hospital. No one knows where she is from. She had scabbies problems when first rescued. ART sent her to the animal hospital for the treatment and is now recovered. We posted her posters around the neighborhood and also had her chip scanned, only to fail to get her home. Margret is a breed dog and it's a rare occassion to see such a dog abandoned. She is a very special dog, pretty and elegant. When her hair grows back, she must be a precious gem.
Name: Tony
Breed: Basenji-Shepherd mix
Sex: Female (spayed)
Age: 5 year old
Current Weight: 35-40lbs

Tony came from Taiwan where he was rescued off the streets. He initially for the first couple of hours is shy and reserved with new folks he meets. Then he warms up and is very receptive. He is a mellow guy who loves to just hang out with his foster family. He is a lover boy. He gets along great with other dogs. He is an option to go with kids who won't expect him to be overly affectionate at first. Once he's comfortable with new folks he's very loving.
Tony would be an option for a single person or a couple or a family. He could live in an apartment or a condo as he doesn't require a large yard and he's non-barking. He is an option to go to the dog park, doggy day camp or hang out at beach. He would be an option to go camping or hiking. Tony is an option to go to the office with Mom or Dad if they are looking for a dog who can handle an office setting. Tony is very versatile and will make a wonderful companion.
Name: Lexus
Breed: Basenji mix
Sex: Female (spayed)
Age: 4 year old
Lexus is a 4 year old Basenji mix who came to the US for a new life. She previously lived in Taiwan and lived on a dairy farm. Her owners found themselves in deep debt and lost their dairy. Unfortunately when they left they did not take Lexus with them but rather left her behind to fend for herself. She was found some weeks later starving and emaciated close to death. The rescue folks in Taiwan were contacted and agreed to take Lexus in and hopefully get her to the US for a new start.
Lexus needs a new home that is on the quiet side and will let her get acclimated. She's been through a rough period and is just starting to trust others again. She is a quiet gal who will be a good companion for someone who wants a mellower type of dog who isn't real high maintenance. She will require an experienced home as she's weary of strangers and new things.
Lexus loves her foster mom. She will follow her around all day. She has a new buddy, 'Tony' who she is good friends with and loves to hang out with him. She also has a small buddy that she likes, so we know she can get along with non-dominant dogs who are happy to co-exist with her. Lexus doesn't care about cats at all. In fact, if anything, she's a little intimidated by them. She will not run after them, that's for sure. She has not had an accident in the house yet.
