Give Them Hope:
We were alerted to the issue of homeless dogs in Taiwan through an email from a fellow So. CA rescuer. The rescue organization, The Animal Rescue Team Taiwan (ARTT), have been taking on homeless Taiwan dogs for some time and asked if we could take in a litter of 4-5 month old Lab puppies and a Beagle.
Taiwan is a population dense country with very small living quarters. The "Dog Fad" has erupted there with cute little puppies being in high demand, with little interest in the large breed dogs and especially street dogs. When folks find that living in close quarters with a dog isn’t necessarily all it’s cracked up to be, the dogs either go the ‘asylum’ (Taiwanese terminology for a shelter) where they’re routinely euthanized after 7 days or they get turned out on the streets. Our rescue counter-parts in Taiwan are primarily focused on the street dogs and rescuing them from the horrific conditions they have been subjected to in their lives. Some dogs find their homes in Taiwan, but overwhelmingly the large breed dogs are overlooked and the rescuers are left with few options.
About once a month we agree to take in dogs who otherwise would have to be euthanized or let go back onto the streets where they would be subjected to the same torture, disease and ailments as before. Thus far we've taken on about 30-40 dogs.

Name: Maggie
Sex: Female (spayed)
Age: 1 year old
Weight: 35lbs
Personality: friendly, reserved initially, let her blossom and fall in love with her!
Maggie was rescued from the site near a fishing pond. She was abandoned with a very tight chain around her neck when she was a puppy. When she grew up, the chain was too tight for her but nobody noticed it until one day a fisherman found out the terrible injury. He tried to remove it but the chain was stuck into the flesh growing with the muscle. Poor Maggie had suffered too long before she was rescued. We drove four hours to go to her rescue.
Currently, Maggie is a healthy girl, a little bit shy but very friendly. She can get along with other dogs well. You will find her a sweet companion if you can give her a chance.

Update: November 19, 2009
Maggie is still nervous with my son, Alex, but she is getting much more used to him. She even sleeps on his bed with him sometimes. I think pre-teen or teenage boys must have scared or hurt her at some time in the past. She is fine with women and girls, and pretty good with many men, but she's scared of boys (seems ok with younger boys, like 8 years, tho).
Noah and I both think she seems to have filled out a bit, but she's still lean. It also looks like some fur is filling in over her scar on Maggie's neck, and it seems less visible than a few weeks ago. She is *almost* house trained. She still occasionally has an accident indoors, but rarely. She walks well on a leash, but is a bit nervous of strangers.
We are really enjoying having her in our home. Maggie is a cuddler, who really likes to settle in next to her person on the bed when we let her. She gives me enthusiastic welcome home greetings and wiggles her whole body.

She and our 9 month old puppy, Cleo, have worked out who is dominant (Maggie is) and now their play seems more like play. It is still very active, but they seem like good friends.
Here is a photo Noah took of Maggie earlier this week. She's basking in the sun on our deck table:
She nearly always chooses to hang out in whichever room we are (kitchen, TV room, bedroom), and she absolutely adores Noah. She doesn't cling to him, but she likes to check on him, and most often chooses to be where he is. When she's scared she runs to him. She is typically quiet, but she does bark at strangers sometimes. She also barks whenever Noah leaves. She has separation anxiety, even when the rest of us are home, but she settles down in 10-20 minutes.
