About Us

Doggie Protective Services was incorporated in 2001. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer-driven, animal rescue organization. Our Tax ID is 91-2164578. We rescue dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes. We also rescue cats on a smaller, yet equally successful scale. We have placed over 12,000 dogs and cats in forever homes since our inception.

Our animals live in foster homes throughout Southern California, Northern California, and Las Vegas. Anywhere from 100-200 dog foster homes are active at various times in some capacity, whether on a long-term, short-term, or overnight basis. And most of our fosters are involved beyond just fostering - they volunteer at adoption events, transport the animals, conduct adoption interviews and do post-adoption outreach. They're rock stars! Our volunteers love to share their work with the dogs on social media, and we highlight on our official accounts those moments that prove how vital they are to the rescue.

We also have a small, vibrant group of cat foster homes that take in our rescue cats and kittens. For cat owners requesting re-homing assistance, we can assist if they are able to foster their own cat while we work to find a new, permanent home.

Approximately 30 shelters throughout Southern California and Northern California partner with us in our rescue efforts. We are contacted by shelters and asked to help with overpopulation by taking in specific dogs who otherwise may not be adopted or who have been at the shelter for an extended period of time. We take in dogs from shelters who do not thrive in a shelter environment or who need medical or behavioral attention outside of the facility. We also take in owner-surrenders from people who are no longer able to care for their dogs. We even intercept litters of puppies and place them in loving temporary homes before they are dropped off at a shelter. We then offer assistance with spay and neuter for the adult dogs in the home to prevent further unwanted litters. And, we coordinate with spay and neuter clinics in low-income neighborhoods known for high numbers of whelping moms or in areas where dogs are often discarded. We work to assist with litters in these locales to avoid more unaltered, unvaccinated dogs going out into the community.

Our partnership with a rescue group in Korea helps us fully realize the impact of a highly dedicated, global network of volunteers. Our Korean rescue partners save dogs who are sold to the meat markets or who are in danger of ending up at the meat markets. It is our strong belief that because we have the resources and the ability to save highly adoptable dogs from certain death, that we should do so. It doesn't matter if the dogs in need are in the Bay Area, LA, or as far away as Korea. Our philosophy is simple: If there is a need, and we can and want to assist, then we will.
